Mike's Story

Mike is a quiet unassuming guy. When you first meet him, he looks around you, not wanting to make eye contact. Within a few minutes though he opens up, and reveals himself to be a man of few words, but possessing a gentle soul.

Mike did not start out his life dreaming of being homeless. He began his life just like the rest of us - innocent and vulnerable. As a child, he didn't picture that he would one day be living on the streets addicted, and without a bed. But things happened in his first few years that set the stage for just that; and Mike found himself one day in trouble with the law, battling addiction, with low self-esteem, and feeling that he was of no value to himself or society. He passed each day in a different haze of booze and drugs.

What helped Mike to turn his life around? Brock Mission was there for him as a safe refuge in the storm. With a warm bed and a roof over his head, and the support of Brock's staff and contacts, Mike was able to put the pieces of his life back together.

Today, Mike owns his own company, and he feels that he has a purpose.

Today Mike is married, and he loves his family.

Today Mike drops by to see "the guys" at Brock Mission, and he helps them understand they too can "get out". They too can become "productive" again.

Mike says he travels the streets of Peterborough on the way to his job and still sees the back alleys, and the corners where he could score that next drink or fix. Today though he drives past and works on rebuilding his life.

Today, Mike is making a difference.

Today, Mike feels like a "success".
